Supporting the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA)

Optima has been providing Systems Engineering (SE) subject matter expertise to the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) since winning a place in 2018 on a dedicated SE Framework, established specifically to support the work of the Authority at its Culham site.

Culham is the home and focus of the UKAEA’s world-leading Fusion research activities, and the Joint European Torus (JET) reactor.  In the last 5 years Optima is proud to have had an uninterrupted presence on the site, providing tailored and embedded teams of Systems Engineering consultants to all of the UKAEA’s flagship programmes, including the Joint European Torus (JET), Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP), Mega-amp Spherical Tokamak Upgrade (MAST-U), Tritium Advanced Technology (H3AT), Fusion Technology Facilities (FTF) and Remote Applications in Challenging Environments (RACE).

Most recently Optima has been invited to support UKAEA’s JET Decommissioning and Repurposing (JDR) programme and the Authority’s contribution to the UK’s Robotics & Artificial Intelligence Collaboration (RAICo).

Over the years Optima’s support to the UKAEA has included: governance and Systems Engineering Management planning; architecting and functional analysis; requirements derivation and management; technical risk management; bid assessment; maturity & metrics reporting; interface definition; and engineering scheduling.

We have complemented our Systems Engineering delivery with tailored packages of Systems Engineering and Systems Thinking training.
