Sustainable Future

Optima is committed to operate and grow the business sustainably and support initiatives and activities that are aligned to address climate change and transition our society towards a low-carbon economy. We aim to support the efforts to solve these complex and multi-sector challenges, especially where we have insight and assistance to offer through the use of a Systems Approach and Systems Engineering practices.

Our goals & progress

When Optima took on the full head lease of our Thornbury, Bristol office in 2018, we saw an opportunity. The 1980s building was functional, but its heating controls, insulation, and lighting had all seen better days. Rather than waiting for perfect conditions or a big budget, we took a practical, phased approach: get the basics right, make improvements people feel immediately, and plan for the bigger moves when the timing aligns.

  • TRVs on all 24 radiators.
  • Loft insulation quadrupled.
  • 77 LED panels installed.
  • Heating schedules set to how people actually use the building.
  • Smarter appliances, cloud migration, EV charging in the car park.
  • Hybrid working built into our carbon strategy from the start.

The result: 2.6 tCO₂e reduction and around £1,200 saved every year — with a better workplace to show for it.

STEM Drive

We aim to contribute strongly to the encouragement of Science, Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) in schools and universities in order to position young people for careers in related professions, providing resource into useful areas for economically valuable activity related to our business and markets, and to provide stimulating careers for the individuals involved. We particularly focus on stimulating Systems Thinking skills and awareness of Engineering career opportunities, especially in Systems Engineering.

One of the latest examples of our continued commitment to supporting STEM education and sparking early interest in engineering careers was sponsoring and working closely with two local schools to prepare them for the FIRST® LEGO® League Southwest Final earlier this year.
