We’re delighted to welcome Mike Winfield to Optima as a Principal Systems Engineering Consultant.
Mike joins Optima with over 17 years’ experience across the nuclear, defence, consultancy and automotive sectors. He began his career designing, analysing and delivering bespoke mechanical products, before moving into leadership roles that combined technical assurance, Systems Engineering and strategic capability development.
He is highly skilled in managing complex systems across their full lifecycle, integrating technical, organisational and regulatory elements to address high-stakes engineering challenges. His expertise includes mechanical design, Systems Engineering (including MBSE) and infrastructure resilience. At AtkinsRealis, he served as Chief Engineer and Professional Head of Discipline for the Mechanical Engineering practice, providing governance to multi-billion-pound defence programmes such as the renewal of MoD production facilities and dry dock upgrades for the Astute Class, ensuring robust technical assurance throughout.
Mike is a Fellow of the IMechE and has led cross-functional teams developing next-generation electric propulsion systems. He has served as Lead Mechanical Technical Authority within the MoD, advising on high-hazard systems and engaging with international stakeholders. His career combines deep technical expertise with leadership, stakeholder engagement and a clear focus on delivering meaningful outcomes.
Outside of work, Mike enjoys walking, running, 3D printing and general tinkering.
